Romania's Solar Industry Is Expected To Revive
Mar 09, 2020
After years of stagnation, Romania's solar industry is expected to rekindle hope.
Recently, Complexul energy Oltenia (CE Oltenia), a thermal power plant in Romania, plans to build 4 photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 310MW at its plant.
It is reported that these 4 photovoltaic projects are part of the company's restructuring and decarbonization plan, and consultants are currently being sought for feasibility studies. The project will cover an area of 595 hectares, with power generation capacity ranging from 60MW to 95MW.
It is worth noting that the Romanian government holds about 77% of CE Oltenia's shares. As the largest shareholder, Romanian Energy Minister Virgil Popescu said at the end of February that the government would provide CE Oltenia with a loan of 1.2 billion euros ($ 281.7 million) to support the company's restructuring plan . The European Commission has approved the plan.
CE Oltenia's coal power complex consists of 12 generation units with a total installed capacity of 3.24GW. The company hopes to shut down 1.3 million kilowatts of coal-fired power generation by 2026 and plans to replace this vacancy with 1.45GW of gas-fired power generation.
If these large-scale photovoltaic projects are finally completed, it indicates that the Romanian solar industry, which has been stagnated for many years, will return to the road of revival.
