Clean energy will provide millions more jobs worldwide by 2050
A study by Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland predicts that solar energy and other renewable energy sources can bring about a global energy employment revolution.
According to the study published on Technology Forecasts and Social Change and the ScienceDirect website, the solar industry will provide 22 million jobs by 2050, jobs created during the global energy transition to a 100% renewable power system post. The world powered by renewable energy will have millions more jobs than traditional power generation technologies.
According to this research, the number of people employed in the global power industry will rise to 35 million in 2050 and up from 21 million in 2015, of which renewable energy supply will account for 80% of future employment opportunities. The study considered employment in a range of industries including manufacturing, construction and installation, operation and maintenance, fuel supply, decommissioning and transmission, and considered potential job losses.
According to related estimates, energy demand will increase from 23.1 PWh in 2015 to around 48.8 PWh in 2050. During this period, the proportion of consumers of electricity with photovoltaic panels will increase from 3% to 20%. In addition, employment data show that the installed capacity of global clean energy power generation will increase from 14 TW in 2030 to more than 28 TW in 2050. By the middle of this century, clean energy power supply will account for 99.65%.
The research report states that renewable power technologies, mainly solar photovoltaic and wind energy, are expected to account for 87% of total power generation by 2050. It is estimated that by 2050, the total output of energy storage technology will account for about 31% of electricity demand.
By 2050, the photovoltaic industry is expected to provide 22 million jobs, far more than the 1.5 million jobs expected from the wind energy industry. The report states that by the middle of this century, energy storage will support the employment of more than 4.5 million workers. In terms of wind energy, about 7.3 million jobs were created from 2020 to 2030. According to the research report, in addition to the increasing cost-effectiveness of solar photovoltaic power generation, by 2050 they will drive For most installations, employment opportunities in the wind energy industry will also stabilize.
