Hidroelectrica Seeks Acquisition Of 520 MW Renewable Energy Projects Including Wind Farms And Solar Power Plants
Aug 20, 2025
Romania's state-owned hydropower operator Hidroelectrica, the country's largest electricity producer, is actively exploring the acquisition of a 250 MW wind farm development and approximately 270 MW of solar energy projects. The plan involves purchasing the company that holds the rights, permits, land, and other assets related to these renewable energy projects. Hidroelectrica has already appointed advisors to conduct due diligence on both the projects and the development company before making a final acquisition decision.

Currently, Hidroelectrica operates 188 hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 6.4 GW, along with a 108 MW wind farm. Earlier this year, the company signed a contract to add a 36 MW battery energy storage system to the Crucea Nord wind farm, marking a significant step in strengthening renewable energy storage capacity.
In May, the company hired contractors for its first solar panel installation projects, with a total capacity of 2.96 MW. These solar power systems will be mounted on the rooftops of 20 hydropower plants, with an investment of €1.77 million. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate solar panel systems into existing renewable power plants.

Additionally, Hidroelectrica is moving forward with floating solar projects. In June, the company awarded a contract for its first 10 MW floating solar power plant, which will be deployed on the reservoir of the Ipotesti hydropower plant. The operator emphasized that the floating photovoltaic project will serve as a pilot to gain expertise in the development and operation of floating solar systems, with the aim of replicating this model at other hydropower sites.
Through these efforts, Hidroelectrica demonstrates its commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio, integrating solar energy with hydropower infrastructure, and promoting sustainable power solutions for the future.
