Saudi Arabia Launches Tender For 1.2GW Solar Power Capacity

Jan 14, 2020

Saudi Arabia's Office of Renewable Energy Project Development (REPDO) has initiated a tender process for a tender for 1.2 GW of solar power capacity.

REPDO will select developers through the third round of tenders in the country's national renewable energy plan to build four solar power projects with installed capacity of 80, 120, 300, and a huge 700 MW.

The Saudi government said that the selected projects must contain at least 17% of domestic content. The deadline for pre-qualification is February 6. REPDO said in March that the second round of the plan, which was intended to allocate 1.5 GW of large-scale solar capacity, attracted a total of 250 bidders. The administration said in July that the number of bidders had been reduced to 60, of which 28 were Saudi Arabian companies. But the final results are yet to be announced.

In the first round of the procurement plan, REPDO implemented a 300 MW solar power generation capacity for a single power plant. The solar project, called Sakaka, is now in operation. The previous first round of bidding attracted global attention with the lowest solar power prices ever recorded-the French energy giant EDF gave an average electricity price of 0.06697 Saudi Riyal / kWh ($ 0.018). However, this bid was rejected, and the Saudi energy giant ACWA successfully won the bid at 0.08872 Saudi Riyal / kWh.
