Renewable Energy Development in West Papua Province, Indonesia

Jun 07, 2023

Indonesia's renewable energy development programme has finally decided to be implemented in several regions, of which West Papua is one of the key areas of focus for the Indonesian government. One form of local sustainable development is the energy transition. The energy transition refers to a shift from the fossil energy sources of the past to the use of new energy sources that do not produce carbon emissions. In this context, the Indonesian government has developed a renewable energy development plan. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the use of renewable energy sources can also address the shortage of non-renewable energy sources.

Renewable energy development

The province of West Papua has great potential and is important in promoting renewable energy development as follows:

1. unsuitable for non-renewable energy sources

Local coal resources are scarce and not a coal producing area, making it unsuitable for steam power plants. In addition, West Papua has to purchase coal from Kalimantan, which significantly increases the cost of use, coupled with the abundance of renewable energy in the region, the Indonesian government is therefore increasing the development and use of renewable energy in West Papua.

Energy sources in the region include wind, hydro and solar energy. In addition, West Papua is also developing gas-fired power plants as one of the main sources of energy.

2. Abundant water resources

The province of West Papua is known to be located along the coast and is rich in water resources and seafood. This gives the region a unique potential to build hydroelectric power plants. Hydroelectricity not only helps to reduce carbon emissions, but also reduces the cost of energy use. However, the government needs to plan carefully to make the development of hydropower a priority in the process of renewable energy development. In addition, the Indonesian government should effectively utilise its human resources in order to facilitate the people of West Papua province.

3. Natural gas has great potential

In addition to abundant water and solar energy resources, West Papua is also rich in natural gas resources. Therefore, gas-fired power generation is one of the options available in the province. The province has a liquefied natural gas extraction centre that can produce up to 500 billion cubic metres of natural gas. However, the steam power stations built in the province in the past will continue to function, and several existing projects have been replaced with gas-engine power plants.

4. Abundant biomass energy

In addition to the points mentioned above, the province has the largest forest cover in Indonesia and is rich in biomass. However, this potential has not been utilised to date. In addition to this, the province can also use biogas from agricultural and livestock products, such as animal manure and surplus sago rice, to generate electricity.

5. Solar energy is abundant

The sun is also a major source of geothermal energy and a potential source of renewable energy for the province of West Papua. However, it is not an easy task to develop solar energy resources well and requires a concerted effort.

In addition to solar energy, wind energy is also an important renewable energy source, but West Papua has not yet achieved efficient wind energy development due to a lack of human resources and advanced experience.

However, the West Papuan government has committed to making the development of renewable energy a local development priority. However, all parties must be well prepared to deal with it so that the fruits of development reach a wider audience.
