Spain Launches A New Tender: 1.8GW Of Solar Energy

Aug 08, 2022

Spain has announced that its fourth round of renewable energy tenders will be held on 22 November, including 1.8GW of solar photovoltaic projects and 1.5GW of wind energy, with new energy installations designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of the Spanish electricity system.

The country's Ministry of Ecological Transformation (MITECO) has also announced that it will also accept upgrades or hybrid projects of existing projects in this latest round of tenders.

In addition, if part of the allocated capacity is not fully dedicated to solar PV or wind 1.5GW, then this capacity can be transferred to other technologies.

Nearly 3GW of solar projects signed in the first two solar and wind tenders held in 2021

This will be the fourth tender to be held in Spain. The first tender was held in January 2021, when over 2GW of solar projects were signed, and the second in October 2021, when only 866MW of solar was signed.

The third tender, originally scheduled for April this year, will finally take place on 25 October, when 520MW of renewable energy will be procured, including 140MW of distributed solar energy.

The announcement comes alongside a series of measures that Spain will implement in the coming months to see a 5% reduction in gas energy consumption. This is in line with the EU's commitment to reduce gas demand and accelerate renewable energy development ahead of winter, which is expected to see a record 40GW of solar development in Europe this year.

Earlier this year, the Spanish government said it would impose a windfall profits tax on electricity companies and banks from next year in order to help fund measures to help Spaniards cope with soaring inflation.

In addition, MITECO has announced the launch of a public proposal aimed at accelerating the development of energy storage for co-location with renewable energy projects.
