In 2017, Munich-based startup Sono Motors launched the Sono Sion, the world's first solar-powered electric car, and recently announced that the Sion will go into production in the second half of 2023 and will be manufactured by Finnish company Valmet Automotive.
As motor1 reported yesterday, as of 1 September this year, more than 20,000 units had been pre-ordered, with an average pre-order price of €2,000. the official Sono Motors website shows that the Sion solar electric car is currently available for a deposit of €500 and a price of €29,900. Sono's plan is to produce around 257,000 Sion cars within seven years, after it has completed its capacity climb.

The Sion solar electric car is described as having solar panels on almost every flat surface, including the bonnet, roof, wings and trunk. Sono officials say the car has 456 solar cells, which provide a range of about 112 kilometres per week, but this figure could be doubled if the weather is good.
In addition to the solar panels, the Sion Solar Electric has a 54 kWh battery pack with a WLTP range of 305 kilometres. The battery has a charging power limit of 75 kW and a bi-directional charging function that turns the car into a mobile power station with an output of 2.7 kW. Powering the Sion Solar Electric is a 120 kW electric motor with a maximum torque of 270 Nm.
