Nov 22, 2023
Last Sunday (November 19), the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) launched a $500 million renewable energy investment platform focused on projects in the development of the entire value chain of renewable energy to reduce the country's power deficit.

The Authority also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to accompany the launch of the platform, dubbed "RIPLE", which will serve as a strategic partner for pilot investments in the platform's core areas of focus, the agency said in a statement released on Sunday.

The statement said that through RIPLE, NSIA would expand energy production, improve energy efficiency, and ensure energy security. According to the agency, "The pilot project for this initiative, located at Tokarawa Industrial Park in Kano State, involves the establishment of a power generation and distribution system to meet the energy demand of 70 megawatts from about 9,000 connected industrial activities, commercial businesses, and residential customers in the area."
Yusuf Umar, RIPLE's Project Manager, said, "We are pleased to partner with IFC to drive Nigeria's transition to energy-efficient solutions." Currently, over 45% of the Nigerian population still faces a lack of electricity.
Dan Croft, IFC's Regional Manager for Africa, added: "Reliable electricity is critical to improving Nigeria's quality of life, productivity and economic growth.IFC is pleased to be working with our longstanding partner, NSIA, to develop and implement the first phase of this innovative energy solution, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. The energy solution will also provide a reliable supply of electricity for commercial, residential, and industrial uses."
