Mozambique Plans To Invest US$40 Million To Develop Solar And Wind Power Plants
Jun 10, 2022
Mozambique's national electricity company, EDM, plans to invest US$40 million in the construction of new solar and wind power plants through the Auction Program for Renewable Energy (PROLER), in order to achieve the goal of full coverage of electricity in Mozambique as soon as possible.
In order to ensure universal access to electricity by 2030, Mozambique will add 600 megawatts of electricity over the next five years, including 200 megawatts of renewable energy. EDM said the expansion project, which will run concurrently with the renewable energy project, will contribute 20% of electricity to the realization of a clean and sustainable energy supply. Projects completed so far under PROLER include the first solar power plant in Mozambique (40 MW in Mocuba, Zambezia) and the Metoro solar power plant (41 MW in Cabo Delgado) Province), the Sofara Dondo and Nyasalichinga solar power plants will also be constructed under PROLER, and a wind power plant will also be constructed in Maputona Macha (which is about to enter the financial closure phase and start construction ). The new projects in the plan have an installed capacity of 30 megawatts and require $40 million in funding. Construction of the first solar energy storage power plant (15 MW capacity) in Nyasa Cuamba is facing challenges.
It is reported that EU representatives suggested that Mozambique establish an electricity center to strengthen the stability of the national distribution network and ensure universal electricity coverage by the end of 2030. The German embassy in Mozambique said that Germany has reached cooperation with the Mozambican private sector to invest about 100 million euros in renewable energy projects in Mozambique. Germany has participated in the modernization of the Mavuzzi and Chikamba hydropower stations in Momanica province.
