Google once again buys electricity from a 1.6 GW renewable energy project

The Internet giant has reached $2 billion in new deals with new investment projects in the US, Chile and Europe.

Global technology giant Google has completed a new 18 energy deals, buying 1.6 GW of electricity from renewable energy projects in Europe and the Americas.

The company said it was its largest primary energy purchase transaction and increased its renewable energy portfolio to 5.5 GW. “Once all of these projects are put into use, our portfolio of carbon-free energy products will consume more electricity per year than Washington, DC, or countries such as Lithuania or Uruguay,” the company said in its blog.

In the United States, these transactions are located in North Carolina (155 MW), South Carolina (75 MW) and Texas (490 MW), while in Europe they are located in Finland (255 MW), Sweden. (286 MW), Belgium (92 MW) and Denmark (160 MW). As for South America, the only deal Google has reached is in Chile, which agreed to buy electricity from a 135 MW hybrid wind and solar power plant. “So far, most of the renewable energy we buy in the US is wind driven, but the decline in solar costs (more than 80% in the past decade) has made solar energy more cost effective,” the Internet giant explain.

As of April 2018, Google has signed a contract to purchase 3 GW of electricity output from global renewable energy projects. The company had revealed at the time that it meant more than $3 billion in new capital investments worldwide. In January, the company signed the first solar PPA in Asia. Recently, it also announced plans to build more than 400 megawatts of solar power capacity in Alabama and Tennessee.
