European Solar PV Market Grows

Dec 16, 2019

According to statistics released by SolarPower Europe of the European Solar Energy Industry Association this week, the solar photovoltaic industry in Europe will grow at a growth rate of 104% in 2019 and is experiencing an "install boom", which is the best year in the history of the European photovoltaic industry.

Data show that in Europe, 16.7 GW of solar installations were added in 2019, an increase of 104% year-on-year, more than double the 8.2 GW increase a year ago.

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said: "The surge in installations shows that solar energy in Europe is on track. In 2019, we are entering a new era of solar development, with more installations than any other power generation technology."

Aurélie Beauvais, policy director of SolarPower Europe, believes that the sharp increase in solar installations is mainly due to the sharp decline in the cost of solar photovoltaic modules.

However, good performance is also driven by policy measures, with EU countries reaching their legally binding renewable energy targets by 2020.

In 2019, Spain is Europe's largest market, with new additions reaching 4.7 GW, followed by Germany (4 GW), the Netherlands (2.5 GW), France (1.1 GW) and Poland (784 MW).

By the end of 2019, SolarPower Europe stated that the EU will have a total of 131.9 GW of solar installed capacity, an increase of 14% over 2018.
