Egypt’s Largest Single-Site Solar PV Project Officially Handed Over For Operation

May 30, 2025

Recently, the Kom Ombo 500 MW solar PV project in Egypt, constructed by China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) and Zhejiang Thermal Power, completed all construction work and officially received the PAC certificate from the client, marking its full transition into commercial operation.

Located in the desert area near Kom Ombo, Aswan in southern Egypt, the utility-scale photovoltaic plant covers approximately 10 square kilometers. The solar farm has a DC installed capacity of 560 MW, with over 1 million solar panels installed, and includes a 220 kV step-up substation.

As Egypt's largest single-site solar power plant, the project is expected to supply clean electricity to around 256,000 households annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 760,000 tons per year. It supports Egypt's Vision 2030 for green development and showcases a scalable Chinese model for solar energy deployment across Africa.

On December 14, 2024, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the grid connection ceremony and praised the project's high-quality execution. The project has drawn attention from government and international stakeholders since its inception.

Egypt remains a strategic overseas market for CEEC. Future plans include deep participation in Egypt's solar energy, wind power, energy storage, hydrogen, and gas power sectors. Leveraging a full-industry supply chain and innovative energy solutions, the company aims to further contribute to Egypt's energy transition and strengthen the China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership.
