Austria Reaches 1GW Of Installed Solar Capacity in A Year

Jun 29, 2023

PV Austria said that a total of 1,009 MW of photovoltaic systems were installed in Austria last year, with solar energy meeting around 6.6 per cent of total electricity demand.

PV Austria
Austria exceeds 1 GW of annual PV installations for the first time in 2022. According to PV Austria, developers installed 1,009 MW of solar energy in Austria, in line with previous forecasts. This figure exceeds the 740 MW in 2021, 341 MW in 2020 and 247 MW in 2019.
At the end of March, the country's cumulative PV capacity reached 3.79 GW. last year, solar energy accounted for 6.6% of Austria's electricity demand.
However, PV Austria stresses that more progress is needed and that at least 13 GW of PV capacity should be installed by 2030 in order to achieve a complete transition to renewable energy. Currently less than 30% of the required capacity has been deployed. In order to achieve climate neutrality, around 50 GW of installed solar capacity will be needed by 2040.
Vera Immitzer, Managing Director of PV Austria, explains that the high cost of electricity is driving individuals and businesses to produce their own solar energy, driving significant growth. However, as demand begins to level off, it remains unclear how the market trend will develop.
