Australia to fully use solar power, Canberra to invest 100 billion US  dollars in photovoltaic cells to produce enough for Sydney twice as much  as the use of electricity in the region, with renewable energy to  replace the Australian cheap coal-fired power plants.

Andrew  Davies and Edward Mortimer, the authors of the report, point out that  Australia's massive coal and natural gas reserves have survived  political turmoil in the Middle East. The  energy security policy challenges facing the next 20 years are  irrelevant compared to the challenges posed by the significant reduction  in available fossil fuels. Unfortunately, at least based on the current technology, renewable energy does not seem to provide enough energy to replace. Developing countries are less likely to use alternative energy on a large scale. As  a result, a significant reduction in the use of fossil fuels is likely  to be due to lack of resources and price factors, rather than artificial  choice. Existing fuel inventories will gradually decline in the next few  decades, rather than a sudden sharp decline, so there is time to wait  for technological progress, but there is no very effective solution.

So, should you choose solar energy? The  report states that per capita solar power requirements are 200 square  meters per person per solar panel, or Australia's current per capita  roof area of four times. If Australia is to cut off the use of fossil fuels and turn to solar  power, even if the cost of each solar panel halved (due to economies of  scale), roughly estimated total cost will reach 100 billion US dollars.

Davies and Mortimer suggested that Australia could jointly develop a  strategic oil reserve with neighboring countries such as New Zealand,  Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island countries to prevent the Middle  East from affecting supply.

As for the establishment of an oil strategic reserve, the growing  tensions in the Middle East caused by Iran's nuclear issue could have  changed the oil export situation in East Asia before the strategic stock  was built.

Australia  does require a large amount of coal reserves and natural gas resources,  including the Sunrise gas field, which is shared with East Timor, which  is estimated to have 5.1 trillion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas  and 2.26 million barrels of condensate, the largest oil resource in  Timor. The exploitation of the natural gas field by Australia and Timor-Leste  has been hampered by the debates of the two governments over the past  nine years.

Is the Australian Government reluctant to consult with East Timor on the development of the Sunrise gas field? Even  if Canberra is able to use solar energy widely, can it be better to  have more environmentally friendly fuels such as natural gas than to  continue to import hydrocarbon fuels from the Middle East or local  coal-fired power generation?
