What are the classifications and properties of battery energy storage technologies?
Jun 22, 2022
Energy storage batteries are simply defined as the storage of electrical energy. It is still in its initial development stage and has not yet formed a large-scale commercialization model. Battery energy storage applications are divided into high-powered occasions for emergency power, battery cars, power plant surplus energy storage and small-powered occasions for nickel-hydrogen batteries, lithium-ion batteries and so on. The following is a brief look at the advantages and disadvantages of several types of battery energy storage.
NiMH batteries
Advantages
1. A substantial increase in energy density.
2. High power density, can be charged and discharged at high currents.
3. Hood low temperature discharge characteristics.
4. long cycle life.
5. Environmental protection without pollution.
6. Technology is more mature than lithium-ion batteries.
Disadvantages
1. Poor high-temperature performance, with a normal working ambient temperature of -15°C to 40°C.
2. Low working voltage, working voltage range 1.0~1.3V.
3. Price is more expensive than lead-acid battery and NiMH battery.
Lithium-ion batteries
Advantages
1. High specific energy.
2. High voltage plateau.
3. Good cycle performance.
4. No memory effect.
5. Environmental protection, no pollution.
Disadvantages
1. High cost, importantly the high price of the cathode material LiC002. With the continuous development of cathode technology, LiMn204 and LiFeP04 can be used as cathodes, which is expected to greatly reduce the cost of lithium-ion batteries.
2. The need for special protection circuits to prevent overcharging or overdischarging.
3. Poor compatibility with ordinary batteries, as it is generally necessary to use three ordinary batteries (3.6V) before a lithium-ion battery can be used as a replacement.
Lead-acid batteries
Advantages
1. Easy availability of raw materials and relatively low and controllable application costs.
2. Good performance in high rate discharge.
3. Good temperature performance, working environment spanning -40~+60℃.
4. Suitable for use in float charging, long service life, no memory effect.
5. Easy recycling of waste batteries, conducive to environmental protection.
Disadvantages
1. Low specific energy.
2. Lower service life than Cd/Ni batteries.
3. The manufacturing process is easy to pollute the environment, must be equipped with three waste treatment equipment.
Each type of battery has its most suitable environment for use and we should choose according to our actual situation.
