Benefits of Installing Solar Energy Systems on Balcony Railings
Apr 08, 2024
Installing a solar panel system on your roof protects the environment and saves money.
For renters or flat dwellers, the process of going solar can be complicated. However, they need not worry! Not having a personal roof does not prevent you from using solar power.
A viable option for those who live in individual flats is to install a portable solar unit on the balcony or any sunny spot. It's worth noting that such a device will usually only provide a small amount of energy.
Where to install solar panels in a flat setting?
In practice, solar panels can be installed in any authorized and appropriate location within an apartment building. Possible locations include roofs, balcony floors, railings, window sills, and even handrails.
If the roof of the flat is accessible, bolt-on solar panels are an option. If roof mounting is not an option, plug-in or portable solar panels, such as a balcony or railing, can be mounted anywhere in the flat where the sun shines.

Precautions
When installing on a balcony, it is advisable to have a tailor-made support system to ensure that the panels are securely fixed, just in case.
The size and number of panels should be chosen to match the size of the balcony. In general, the larger the panel size, the higher the wattage and the more cost-effective it is.
Although panels with an output of 320 or 360 watts are available, they tend to be bulky; 160-watt panels measuring 150x70 cm and weighing 12.5 kg are more suitable.
If two panels are to be connected, an inverter with an input voltage range of 22-60V is recommended. Alternatively, a micro-inverter can be used instead of a conventional inverter.
Advantages of solar installations on balconies
Solar panels on balconies offer the convenience of DIY installation without the need for a professional solar installer. If your residence is located in the northern hemisphere, facing your balcony towards the south is the best option.
A south-facing balcony maximizes solar energy capture, yielding higher energy. Even east-west facing balconies can yield significant benefits if you use a smart power optimizer.
Flat owners can increase the value of their property by integrating renewable energy solutions, which is an attractive feature for potential future sales or environmentally conscious tenants.
Another benefit of this setup is the portability of the solar PV system, allowing you to take it with you when you move.
Optimizing Energy Output Tips
The inclusion of batteries in a balcony solar setup contributes to its higher initial cost, which in turn affects the return on investment timeline.
Given the constrained number of panels and their limited sun exposure on a balcony, the energy yield might be modest. However, there are strategies to enhance energy production.
Seasonal adjustment of the panels' angle can significantly boost energy capture. For balcony setups, modifying the tilt of the panels is relatively straightforward.
Minor adjustments could be made periodically - hourly, daily, or monthly. Often, altering the angle a few times annually suffices.
The proximity of balcony-mounted panels makes regular cleaning feasible, unlike rooftop panels which pose a challenge.
Accumulated dust and debris can reduce energy production by about 1%. In areas prone to dust and high traffic, failing to clean the panels properly can lead to energy losses of 4-6%.
