BNEF: Top 10 Forecasts for Clean Energy Development by 2018
Jan 19, 2018

Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) released 10 projections related to clean energy development in 2018 -
1) The global investment in renewable energy will reach 330 billion U.S. dollars in 2018
According to figures just released by BNEF, global clean energy investment in 2017 totaled 333.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 3% from 2016 but still about 7% below 2015's record low. The global clean energy investment is estimated to be 330 billion U.S. dollars by 2018, basically unchanged from 2017. It is noteworthy that the total investment in clean energy will no longer increase significantly due to the decrease in the cost of renewable energy (photovoltaic and wind power), so even a stable total investment will still be a great achievement.
2) 2018 global new PV installed capacity of more than 100 GW
In 2017, the global installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation is 98 GW (of which 53 GW are from China). It is estimated that the global new PV installed capacity will reach 107 GW in 2018, of which China is expected to reach 65 GW with the market in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa expand.
3) The wind power will continue to recover in 2018 with a new installed capacity of 59 GW
The new installed capacity of 56 GW for global wind power in 2017 remained broadly in line with 2016 (54 GW), significantly lower than the record 2015 (63 GW). It is estimated that global wind power installed capacity will continue to recover by 2018, with additional installed capacity of 59 GW and a new record of 67 GW in 2019.
4) 2018 lithium-ion battery prices fell 10-15%
In spite of the substantial increase in the cost of raw materials upstream of lithium-ion batteries in 2017, the cost of lithium-ion battery packs is expected to be reduced by 10-15% in 2018 due to economies of scale (capacity of battery packs and increased energy density). By 2018 global battery energy storage will be more than 2 GW / 4GWh, South Korea will be the largest single market.
5) 2018 global sales of electric vehicles close to 1.5 million
It is estimated that the global sales of electric vehicles will reach 1.5 million in 2018 (of which China accounts for more than 50%), an increase of 40% over 2017.
6) By the end of 2018, the world's driverless cars traveled more than 13 million kilometers
By the end of 2017, unmanned vehicles running various experiments worldwide have traveled a total of 5.2 million miles (8.37 million kilometers) and are expected to have a cumulative mileage of 8.3 million miles (13.36 million kilometers) by the end of 2018.
7) US natural gas production will hit a new record in 2018
In 2017, the highest point of natural gas production in the United States reached 77.3 billion cubic feet per day. It is estimated that the U.S. natural gas production will climb to a new record of 80 billion cubic feet per day by the end of 2018. While Henri, the American natural gas
Hub prices will be around $ 3 / million British thermal units (up and down within 10%).
8) In 2018, the international trade of liquefied natural gas will reach 120 billion U.S. dollars
Global LNG demand (LNG) will reach 285 MMtpa (285 million tons / year) in 2017, an increase of 10% over the previous year. It is estimated that global LNG demand will continue to grow by 7-10% (China is the main driving force) by 2018. Considering the rising price of LNG, the global LNG market will reach US $ 120 billion (an increase of 15% over the previous year).
9) The United States will have 13 GW of coal-fired units retired in 2018
Despite President Trump's insistence on coal, the prospects for coal are gloomy. Under the effect of the market price of energy, 13 GW of coal-fired units will be decommissioned by the United States in 2018, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rejected the U.S. Department of Energy's subsidies for coal-fired power plants and nuclear power plants in the name of energy security Claim.
10) New installed capacity of 10 GW renewable electricity generation in India by 2018, promising outlook after 2019
In 2017, renewable electricity generation in India is newly installed at 12 GW. It is estimated that the additional installed capacity of renewable energy power generation will reach 10 GW in 2018 and 13 GW in FY 2018. However, it is estimated that installed capacity of renewable energy in India will exceed that of fossil energy generation after 2019.
